Dolsoft's three-story office on Nguyen Van Troi Street looks like
thousands of other business offices in HCM City. But like other
computer software companies worldwide, what really counts at Dolsoft
is the corporate software, the staff that runs it. Over the past
decade, that staff and Dr. Dinh Tien Son-Dolsoft deputy chairman of
the board, who is considered the company's brain-have built Dolsoft
into a software company in Vietnam that is capable of developing
comprehensive software solutions based on GIS technology (Geographic
Information System).
"Dolsoft system, called DolGis, provides a multitude of software
solutions, both suiting specific applications in Vietnam and reaching
industrial standards accepted worldwide," says Son about his
products. Applying DolGis, Son and Dolsoft's software writers have
participated in many projects in Vietnam. One of Dolsoft's major
projects is building the 1/10,000 scale map of HCM City in 1993.
DolGis has also been used in viable industrial projects in Vietnam,
for instance, the deep-water seaport of Dung Quat and Dung Quat petro-chemical
complex (1993-1994), and the Southern Vital Economic Zone (1995-1996).
Other applications of DolGis include those in PetroVietnam's
management of oilfields (1995-1998) and the GIS development in 36
cities and provinces in Vietnam (1996-1999).
DolGis solutions are written to provide applications to management,
especially in the areas related to maps. The software programs are
used to establish a wide range of maps with respect to cadastry,
zoning, population, traffic, environment, tourism, and the like. They
are also capable of managing works related to infrastructure such as
housing, roads, telephone lines, and water supply and drainage.
Notably, according to Son, his software applications based on DolGis
are typical of Vietnamese solutions. "It's possible to run them
with PCs using simple configuration available on the Vietnamese
market," he explains. "The software programs are
user-friendly, employing easy-to-use and simple interface. Moreover,
they are easy to install and their technology needs only a short time
to be transferred." However, adds Son, DolGis applications
outpace many other GIS-based solutions available on the world market.
Dolsoft's office is not far from Tan Son Nhat International Airport in
HCM City. The proximity reminds users of the company's products on
foreign market. "We were one of the first Vietnamese companies
licensed by the Government to invest in overseas projects," says
Son. Dolsoft has set up DolsoftWorld, a branch in Luxemburg, to
promote its software programs. "In addition, we have formed
partnerships with several Europe-based companies such as COMMGIS and
PiSoft which are our sales agents," Son elaborates.
In 1997, the first Dolsoft products were introduced in Europe and two
years later in America. According to Son, the most popular Dolsoft
software applications in the European markets include DolGis2D
(integrating and exploiting maps and non-spatial information),
DolGis3D (exploiting 3-dimentional maps), DolGis Browser (accessing
GIS data on the Internet), and DolVector (a tool for vectorizing).
But among these, DolVector is the unique product. "It's a tool
for full-automatic vectorizing at high speed and with precision,"
Son confirms. "DolVector digitizes maps automatically at a speed
much higher and with better quality than other similar programs."
Ten years ago, Son, then a doctor of mathematics, joined hands with
other partners to form Dolsoft. Now, as energetic and enthusiast as
ever, Son is eager to apply his cherished project to codify house
numbers in HCM City using GIS technology. "Historic conditions
and loose management have resulted in chaotic house numbers in HCM
City and some other metropolises," he explains. "In many
cases, it's a waste of time and money to seek houses with the current
numbering method. Our solution can help get rid of the inconveniences
and financial losses."
In cooperation with VDC (Vietnam Data Communications) and DMC (Data
Management Corporation), Dolsoft has launched basao.com.vn, an online
library of maps of Vietnam. As the website includes details of 61
cities and provinces and some other major cities in the world,
it can help find a location with only a click.
"We're on the path to globalization," says Son.
"That means we Vietnamese must have something to take to the
process. With Dolsoft software programs, we want to make our modest
contribution to that process."
